Depop's Impact

At Depop, impact is at the heart of what we do. The fashion industry is one of the world's most resource-intensive — responsible for millions of tonnes of waste and significant carbon emissions each year.[1] That's why our mission is to make fashion circular: keeping what already exists in use for longer, and inspiring millions more people to choose secondhand over new.
Every secondhand purchase our community makes extends the life of clothing and reduces demand for new - and that’s where real impact happens.
We believe everything you want already exists. Depop makes circularity easy and exciting — helping people discover and buy great, affordable fashion for themselves, their friends, and their families.

Introducing Our Impact Goals

Our Impact Goals focus on the issues that matter most to our community and where we can make the biggest difference. We’re advancing long-term targets across five key environmental and social focus areas that guide how we grow and create positive impact.
  • Circularity - Our aim is to change the way we shop, by keeping clothes that already exist passing from person to person. We're promoting a more circular fashion industry and inspiring more people to shop circular. Learn more about circular fashion.
  • Net Zero Emissions Reductions - We're committed to a better future for the planet, and have set a Net Zero target in line with science-based Net Zero standards[5]. Learn more about Depop's climate actions.
  • Sustainability Operations - We're aiming to run best-in-class sustainable operations, which covers our commitments to renewable energy, zero waste and energy efficiency. Read our Impact Goals to find out more.
  • Employee Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - We want to build the most diverse, progressive home of fashion, and, to get there it starts with our own teams. Diverse and inclusive teams are key to building more creative and innovative solutions for our community. Read our Impact Goals to find out more.
  • Marketplace Diversity Equity and Inclusion - We're a community-led platform; everything we do is aimed at supporting and promoting our incredible collective of buyers and sellers. We work to ensure our platform is a diverse and inclusive place to buy and sell, expanding access to economic opportunity through programmes like Now/Next and Level Up.

Displacement Rate

Buying secondhand can prevent the purchase of brand new items, which keeps items in use for longer, and offsets the demand for new clothing. We measured our displacement rate using an industry standard framework to understand how circular business models can displace new purchases.

Environmental Impact

A simple way to reduce the environmental impact of fashion is to reuse what already exists. Our Environmental Impact Measurement Methodology sets out Depop’s approach to estimate the environmental impact of secondhand purchases made on Depop compared to brand-new items.

Circular fashion at Depop

Our mission is to make fashion circular - encouraging millions more people to choose secondhand, extend the lives of their clothes, and help redefine fashion’s future by changing the way we consume. To do this at scale, we’re making secondhand fashion the most exciting, inspiring and accessible alternative to buying new.
